Yesterday, I mentioned that I had known a couple people who have competed as Olympians, it turns out the DM Register also happened to publish a story yesterday about one of them: Rivals Under The Same Roof. The first Olympian that came to mind was Erin (Woods) White, an ISU softball player who competed for Canada. Erin's good friend and teammate in college, Sarah(1), used to date one of my pledge brothers back in the day and would bring Erin around to parties. Hope and I last ran into Erin at Brother's in Iowa City several years ago.
The second story ran today in the DM Register that John Grisham's newest book will feature a story centered on a fictional quarterback from the University of Iowa that had failed in the NFL and now was offering his services to a startup team in Italy. I've been a Grishman fan since about 10th grade and have collected his books almost as long. It's neat that he'd feature an Iowan and to fit his foreign story line it makes sense that the QB would be a Hawkeye (like Drew Tate of Saskatchewan's Roughriders or Brad Banks of Montreal's Alouettes) rather than a Cyclone (like domestic pro's Seneca Wallace in Seattle and Sage Rosenfels in Houston). I'll have to set this one on the shelf right next to Paul Shirley's book to ensure bookshelf harmony.
(1)She's the former athlete that Jim White used to watch play in Ames referenced in the story.
